AFFORDABLE CARE ACT – Support Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare?

Doug Jones – Yes. Fix, not end, Obamacare. Asked Trump to reverse Justice Dept. support for lawsuit seeking to repeal ACA.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Calls Obamacare “a failed experiment.” Advocates a “return to the free market.”  Supports Health Savings Accounts and companies competing across state lines.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE – Require political ads to disclose their largest funders?

Doug Jones – Yes. Backs act to remove barriers to voting, tackle dark money in politics, and “break special interests’ stranglehold” on DC.

CLIMATE CHANGE – Consider human-caused climate change a serious threat? Address as a top priority by taxing or limiting output of greenhouse gases?

Doug Jones – Yes. Climate change is a scientific reality. “The consequences of our unchecked use of fossil fuels for our planet and our health have been clear for decades. Period.”  Invest in renewable energy and conservation, retraining coal miners, and “environmentally friendly” business practices, without “unnecessary and expensive regulations.”

Tommy Tuberville – No. Only God changes climate. “You do have a little bit [of] change of weather, but somebody needs to prove to me that it is because we are burning coal or we have cars driving on the streets.”  The situation “won’t change enough in the next 400 years to affect anybody. But it [gives] the left an opportunity to scream and yell.”

CORONAVIRUS – Support administration’s response to coronavirus pandemic?

Doug Jones – No. Criticized the administration for failing to ensure adequate nationwide virus testing. Criticized Trump COVID relief executive orders as “more for show than actual help.”

Tommy Tuberville – Yes. Called Trump “the right guy at the helm” “because he’s a business guy.” State lockdowns are “government telling you what to do … we don’t believe in socialism.”

Doug Jones – “The judiciary is supposed to be an independent body. … not just a rubber stamp … This should be an appointment by the next President of the United States regardless of who that might be.”

Tommy Tuberville – “The Constitution requires President Trump to offer a nominee, and the Senate should begin the confirmation process as soon as possible.”

EDUCATION – Use public funding for private and/or for-profit schools?

Doug Jones – Unclear. “Strong, quality K-12 public education built America …. We must ensure our local schools get the resources they need,” not abandon “schools to experiments overseen by political donors.”

Tommy Tuberville – Yes. “School choice, charter schools, and improving our existing public schools are all things that need to be a part of the education mix for Alabama children.”

ENVIRONMENT – Support development of major gold and copper Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay?

Doug Jones – Mixed. “Will support policies that conserve… waterways, lands and wildlife.” Voted against attempt to restore Obama Clean Power Plan.

Tommy Tuberville – Loosen. Supports reducing “the size and scope of the federal government.”

EQUALITY ACT – Should LGBTQ people be protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation?

Doug Jones – Yes. Credits his gay son with helping him to change his views. Co-sponsored anti-discrimination Equality Act.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Opposes laws protecting people against discrimination because of sexual orientation.

FINANCIAL REGULATION – Tighten or loosen regulation of banks and credit card companies?

Doug Jones – Mixed. Opposed proposal to roll back restrictions on payday lenders. Voted to relax Dodd-Frank bank rules as too restrictive on smaller banks.

Tommy Tuberville – Likely loosen. Strong supporter of “smaller government.” Criticized for being partner in a hedge fund where his partner committed fraud, but points out he also lost money.

GUN LAWS – Enact more restrictive legislation?

Doug Jones – Yes. “An avid hunter.” But wants ban on bump stocks, waiting period to buy a semi-automatic weapon, and laws to boost school safety and strengthen background checks.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Opposes “any form … of gun control. They are not taking my guns … . They want to take your guns away so they can control you.”

IMMIGRATION – Path to citizenship for “DACA” residents brought to the U.S. as children?

Doug Jones – Yes. “Children and young adults in the DACA program are contributing members of our society, serving in the military and owning businesses that employ Americans.”

Tommy Tuberville -No. “Our tax dollars should not be used to provide for those who break our laws with their simple presence.”

IMMIGRATION – Support expanded border walls?

Doug Jones – No. “Too expensive.” “The last wall … constructed to stop people’s movements between countries was the Berlin Wall. The [U.S.] is better than that.”

Tommy Tuberville – Yes. Would give more resources to detention centers and border patrols to fight “illegal immigration that brings drugs, terrorists, and criminals into our country on a daily basis.”

IMPEACHMENT – Supported Trump impeachment and Senate calling witnesses?

Doug Jones – Yes for both. President cannot be “above the law.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Impeachment was a “sham.” “I will stand with President Trump.”

IRAN – Oppose military attacks on Iran without congressional approval?

Doug Jones – Yes. Co-sponsored Senate resolution requiring congressional approval for sending “our troops into harm’s way.”

LEGAL ABORTION – Keep legal or ban?

Doug Jones – Legal. Voted against bill to ban abortion after 20 weeks, which “could [lead] to a mother’s death.” Supports “a woman’s freedom to choose what happens to her own body.”

Tommy Tuberville – Ban. Only exception to save the life of the mother. Favors state law without exceptions for rape or incest. Abortions may be seen in the future as “this generation’s holocaust.”

MARIJUANA – Legalize?

Doug Jones – States should decide. Take marijuana off federal controlled substances list.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Medical use is okay. “If we ever put marijuana on our streets legally, it’s over.”

MINIMUM WAGE – Raise federal hourly minimum wage?

Doug Jones – Yes. Supports “raising the minimum wage to a living wage.”

Tommy Tuberville – Likely No. Government shouldn’t be responsible for ensuring everyone has a livable income.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD – Allow receipt of public funds for non-abortion-related care?

Doug Jones – Yes. “Will defend a woman’s access to contraception.” Voted against proposal to defund Planned Parenthood.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds.

POLICE RESTRICTIONS – Restrict police use of force and increase public oversight?

Doug Jones – Mostly Yes. “We need to remove the systemic racism in society and in law enforcement.” Calls to “defund” are more about reforming police than cutting budgets.

Tommy Tuberville – No. “We gotta get ’em more money” to build “stronger, better, well-trained police departments.”

STUDENT FINANCIAL AID – Support free or subsidized tuition for lower-income individuals, or student debt forgiveness?

Doug Jones – Unclear. Concerned with the racial gap in student debt, would support forgiveness for work in targeted jobs and locations. Also more apprenticeship programs.

Tommy Tuberville – No. Opposes free public college and student loan forgiveness. “One person should not be … paying off someone else’s student loan debts. This doesn’t teach responsibility.”

TAXES – Support administration’s $1.9 trillion (2017) tax cuts?

Doug Jones – No. Criticized tax plan. Troubled by “tax breaks for the wealthy …. [and] tax increases or no tax cuts for the middle class.

Tommy Tuberville – Yes. “We are now seeing record job growth across the board. President Trump’s tax cuts … have driven this success.”

VOTING RULES – Ease voting rules due to COVID?

Doug Jones – Yes. “We should be making it easier for eligible Americans to vote, not harder.”
