4,000,000 Americans Turn 18 in 2021 – That’s Voting Power

Amidst all the dreadful news and the clouds raining over our democracy, there are some very exciting facts like this one:

4,000,000 young people will turn 18 this year in the United States. This group alone could determine the future of our country if they register and vote. Yet in 2020, 18 year olds’ voter turnout rate was only 46% (12% in South Dakota!). More than 2,000,000 of them did not vote!

Please help our campaign mobilize young people to register and vote! Our Civic Influencers™ are working to get polling sites on college campuses and in their communities. They are also fighting for more accessible voter IDs for their peers. They are sharing candidate information and fighting voter suppression as well, such as efforts to gerrymander their campuses and communities. Our Civic Influencers receive $500 per term (3 terms per year) to defray their costs.

In 2022, over 8,000,000 Americans 18 and 19 who were too young to vote in 2020 can vote and make history. Help them register to vote and turn out to the polls.

Here are a few facts about these 18 and 19 year olds who can vote in 2022:

  • 4,000,000 million young people are turning 18 each year in 2021 and 2022.
  • 8,000,000 new young voters will spread across 50 states and territories.
  • 160,000 new voters (on average) in each state can potentially vote and make a difference.

If these 18 and 19-year-old voters register and vote, they will far surpass the margin by which either presidential candidate won in 2020, and can even shape the outcomes of many Congressional races. For instance,

  • 160,000 young voters easily beat the vote margins in Arizona (10,457) and AZ1 (11,700).
  • 160,000 young voters easily beat the vote margins in Georgia (12,670) and GA 6 (36,446) and GA 7 (10,336).
  • 160,000 young voters easily beat the vote margins in Wisconsin (20,682).
  • Young voters easily beat the vote margins in several Pennsylvania district races: PA 7 (14,068), PA 8 (12,221) and PA 17 (9,969).

That’s Voting Power! In the 2022 midterms, young people can determine the outcomes of so many races that matter on the issues they care about. I explain this more in the video below. To access it, simply click it.  https://youtu.be/u-U01KxCl0Y

We are training and deploying over 600 young Civic Influencers™ on and off college campuses. These Civic Influencers™ mobilize their peers, help them connect the issues they care about to voting and get them to register and to vote. We show our Civic Influencers™ these data points that we are sharing with you, so that they know that they have the power to determine the outcomes in local elections now, in the midterms in 2022 and presidential elections in 2024!

We use data like this to help young people understand their civic power, register to vote and vote, especially in areas they can have the largest impact on the issues and elections they care about.

The bad news: Many legislatures are using voter suppression tactics that are meant to shut off young people’s Civic Power, preventing them from registering and voting.

Our Civic Influencers are using our data-driven approaches to develop impactful interventions and strategies needed to combat voting barriers across the country. We know that youth voter turnout was highest and had the largest increases in states that automatically mailed ballots to voters, had same day registration, used online voter registration, had extended periods for early voting, provided extended day voting, coordinated time off from classes, had pre-registration, incorporated voter registration programming in high school curricula and more. Our Civic Influencers organize their peers and advocate for these pro-democracy and pro-American options.

Please make a gift to support our Civic Influencers™  on and off campus as they help their peers get registered and vote. Our democracy and freedoms need you. Please give today

In solidarity,

Maxim
